UN adviser calls for end to conflict

May 15th, 2009 admin Posted in News, Videos No Comments »

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon’s Special Adviser on the prevention of genocide Francis Deng made a statement on the 15th of May in which he called on UN and other agencies full and unfettered access to all civilians and detainees. According to the UN News centre, Walter Kälin, the Secretary-General’s Representative for the Human Rights of Displaced Persons, who said the LTTE is preventing civilians from leaving the area and placing military installations close to them, while the Government, for its part, has been using heavy weapons such as mortars there in recent days. “This combination of factors must have resulted in unacceptably high numbers of civilian casualties.”

It appears that the International Community including the UN are voicing concern and are fully involved in bringing about a pause but the Government of Sri Lanka relentlessly pursues the military option. Prolonging the conflict is causing high number of causalities and untold misery to those tens of thousands of people trapped in this area. It is also becoming evident that the Government’s time limit for their ‘rescue’ operation continues to extend. …To read the UN News Centre reporting on 15th of May Read the rest of this entry »

UN Security council voice grave concern

May 14th, 2009 admin Posted in News, Videos No Comments »

UN Security council President Vitaly Churkin ( Russian Federation) read out a statement on the 13th of May on behalf of the security council, in which he said that the security Council “strongly condemn the LTTE for its terrorism over many years and for its continued use of civilians as human shields, and acknowledge the legitimate right of the Government of Sri Lanka to combat terrorism” He concluded the statement by saying “The members of the Security Council, mindful of the necessity to find a long-term solution without the threat of violence, underline that the needs of all communities in Sri Lanka have to be addressed”.
Political observers believe that finally the International Community is talking about Sri Lanka with one voice. The majority of the influential Nations such as USA, EU, Japan and India are calling on the LTTE to lay down arms and in the meantime stressing that the Government of Sri Lanka should be much more transparent with their work with the displaced people. US President on Sri Lanka

US President on Sri Lanka

The President of the USA Barack Obama made a statement on the 13th of May 2009 from the lawn of the White House about the “humanitarian crisis that’s taking place in Sri Lanka” He also said that he was saddened by the desperate news in recent days refering to the plight of the people trapped in the war zone.
He also called on the LTTE to “lay down their arms and let civilians go to”. It appears that the refusal of the LTTE to lay down arms; has become the single obstacle for the International Community to prevail on Sri Lanka and persuade them to address the serious concerns about the people in Vanni.
President also assured that the US “stands ready to work with the international community to support the people of Sri Lanka in this time of suffering” and also appealed to Sri Lankan Government to seek a “secure and lasting peace”. Read the rest of this entry »
